The Canadian Reader / Nos Nouvelles (formerly Pleins Feux sur le Canada) is a classroom-ready current events resource for students in grades 3 to 5. This publication, available in English and in French, combines current Canadian events and issues with geography to expand students' knowledge of Canada while enhancing their ability to read and understand informational text.
Published eight times during the school year, each issue focuses on one of six key reading comprehension strategies – making connections, questioning, visualizing, inferring, summarizing, and synthesizing/transforming – and includes:

  • three news stories, written at a level students can understand;
  • detailed literacy-based lesson plans, including ready-to-use graphic organizers and criteria for assessment;
  • Did You Know? – a non-fiction comic strip featuring background information related to one of the news stories, accompanied by a lesson plan and supporting material;
  • The WebVoyagers – an informational cartoon strip highlighting a location or person in Canada, together with an Internet-based lesson plan;
  • a map assignment that focuses on a region of Canada.

A subscription runs from September through June (one issue per month except in January and April) and costs $160, including shipping.
Subscribers receive one copy of each issue which they may photocopy for use by all teachers and students within one school. Subscriptions are delivered by first class mail, or via Internet download.
